Queue row

The largest component in the product: 259 instances across 39 screens, 200 in the queue and 25 in the log. Seven zones, and every one of them is there to answer the same question.

Design principle 1 is this component. Every row is a decision, not a record: if a line in the queue does not tell the analyst what to do next, it does not earn its height. That is why there are seven zones and not four, and why the verdict Clerk proposes is one of them rather than something you open the case to find.

Anatomy

Behaviour at width

Two things happen to the row, and only one of them is at a point. Below 1280 (Width) --row-tracks collapses to 1fr in tokens.css and the row is one column: the head is not rendered, because column names mean nothing once the line is five lines; cost goes, because on a phone she is not choosing what to read next; age and severity align left and the gap drops to --space-1. Above the point nothing switches. The side padding is a clamp(--space-3, 0.31rem + 0.31vw, --space-4), which was a query at 1560 until stage 10 and now makes the same trade continuously, and the two prose tracks take a ceiling of 32ch for what the case is and 36ch for the verdict, so they stop growing and the rest of the width goes to the pane.

Variants

Two axes and no third. Both are settled by where the row stands rather than by anybody choosing.

AxisValueUsesThe rule
list.row200 the queue. Seven zones at --row-tracks
.row--log25 the same seven zones at different widths, --row-tracks-log. Nothing appears and nothing disappears, which is exactly why this is a variant and the shift brief’s line is not
head.row--head39 sticky, so the column names stay while two hundred rows go past under them. It is a row and it is not a decision, which is why it is a variant rather than its own component and why it takes none of the states
sizeno values– Prohibited. Density is design principle 5 and the row is already at 12px on a 1.35 line. A comfortable row would be an admission that the dense one is unreadable

Two track sets stopped being values from nowhere in this round. The second instrument at step 1 found five declarations of --row-tracks and said two of them carried values recorded in no document. They are --row-tracks-log and --row-tracks-moved in tokens.css now, and the component files read them rather than writing a track list of their own.

When to use it

This is the queue, and the queue is the product. Rasha arrives at eighteen of these across twelve of forty tenants and has to know which three to open first. The row exists so that she can decide without opening anything: severity sorts, the client gives it context, and the verdict tells her whether Clerk has already done the work.

Where she meets it. Six hours a day. That is the whole argument for 12px, a 1.35 line and no decorative whitespace, and it is why the hover is the quietest in the system: a pointer passing over a row is not a decision, and 265 rules in this product agree.

Rule and anti-rule

Do

Seven zones, all filled, one line. The verdict is on the row, so the analyst can rule on the list without opening the pane.

Do not

Not for the fleet. That is frow, three zones, and it is a record rather than a decision: nothing in it is waiting for a ruling, so it has no severity, no verdict and no selected state.

The superseded state is a hatch and not a colour, and the reason is that there is no colour left. The accent has four jobs and no fifth, and the severity ramp belongs to cases. A hatch also keeps the row readable, which matters: a ruling that was replaced is still a ruling and somebody is reading it to find out what happened.

Limits

Rules of composition and context, which no anti-rule can carry: nothing else is the right component to take, and what is wrong is the count or the neighbour. Counted on the grey corpus at stage 09, and every one of them is a function in design/kit/checks/rules.mjs. Full table with sources on Architecture.

States

Live, in both themes. Point at the first row, hold the pointer down, tab into it. The second one is selected.

Being ruled on takes two signals and not one. The ground moves a full step further than hover, and a 3px inset in --line-current marks the edge. The inset is what survives at 360, where the ground alone is 1.23 off the page and the row is the only thing on the screen.

The head takes no states at all. It cannot be opened and it is not a decision. Out of reach does not exist: a case that cannot be opened is not in the queue.

Motion

Response, 120ms, the browser's own ease. What moves is a ground, two hundred of them on a queue. Named one by one rather than as all, because all animates what nobody ordered and drags the layout properties in behind it. Never a size and never a position: those make the browser recalculate the layout of the page on every frame. Under prefers-reduced-motion it is 1ms, and this component does nothing to make that happen: it reads var(--dur-fast) and the token is redefined once. Full reasoning on Motion.
